When the Gauls realized what the Romans were up to, a great patriotic movement grew up among these technically sophisticated people (as archeological evidence now shows) and a million Gaulish warriors went to the rescue of a town that Caesar had himself surrounded. Defeating this force went on to force the surrender of the town of Alesha and forced the surrender of tens of thousands of Gauls. Caesar had the right hand of all cut off...except for the 50 Gauls who did the dirty work. The handless Gauls were released ...and Gaulish resistance ended...abruptly. Gaul became a peaceful province.

After Ww I, the Ukraine tried to become independent. Much of Trotsky's fight in the horrible civil war in which 6 million people died. The Ukrainians were sullen, especially the Kulaks, so Stalin deliberately starved the Ukraine...killing another 5 million. Invading Germans were enthusiastically welcomed in 1942 (initially) and a resistance continued until 1955.

The Chechnyans are a tough people. They thought they could free themselves from Putin. Putin leveled the city of Grozny and installed a picked leader. Chechnya is now docile.

The WSJ has an article today on the measures Putin is taking in the captured city of Kherson to subdue the population, selective arrests etc.
