This is how Michael Cohen got investigated and his supposedly privileged relationship with DJT got "pierced". Since the investigation of Cohen was based on good evidence that Cohen had committed some fraud with the taxi medallions, it didn't get as much pushback as it would have with a sketchy predicate like Spygate had.
