I don't buy that explanation, he was fairly cavalier early on, then went to asking for someone in his audience to reply with the name of a disappeared person so he's know the connection was good. After a few mentions of the name he explained the disappeared part, right about that time he seemed to get more earnest. I took it seriously, not at all comedy. He was pissed and scared, my read.
