To clarify — the fact that Arestovych is smart and articulate - does NOT make him a sympathetic figure. To the contrary - his type of argument is one of the reasons why this war happened, endangering the whole world.

Very simple - back in 2019, he argued that without NATO membership Ukraine would be taken over by Russia. Was he right or wrong? I think he was wrong (and the brutality and hatred of the fighting only confirm that) - but that’s not the point right now. Clearly, he must have been influential wrt dumping the Minsk accords. If the country’s survival depends on NATO membership, what do you do? You do not give up that aspiration - you incorporate it into the very foundations of the nation's political life. Ukraine went so far as to include it into their constitution.

Bad ideology, bad political thinking - leads to bad outcomes. His predictions about the current war were a self fulfilling prophecy. In effect, he served those who wanted to see the region torn in war and conflict.

Big picture social engineers often are dangerous SOB’s.
