I believe 3Com's in roads into MCI came from the USRobotics merger. MCI use their kit for IP dial services. From memory, Onstream kit was pretty good prior to acquisition. Put that together with 3Com's Volume manufacturing capacity...

I've just started looking at this thread - looks interesting
