One of the considerations in a laptop DVD or portable DVD player is that the LCD must be fast enough to show 30 frames per second without blurring, and the LCD must not not suck power at this rate. If the laptop's LCD cannot handle this, then an upgraded LCD is an additional cost over the DVD-ROM drive and decoder card.
