One other thing. If I remember correctly, CDC ran a peer reviewed study of 20 years of dog bite data and found that only 17% of the cases identified as pitbull could actually be claimed to be accurate. About 40% of the cases attributed to pitbulls did not document enough to be able to actually tell what breed the dog was. And the remainder 43% were demonstrably falsely identified.

I've been near pitbulls and never had to flinch about them. They are very nice dogs. That said, it is important to understand that dogs are individuals. One dog is no more like another than one American is like another American. Every dog needs to be understood on their own rather than as their breed. And secondly, like I said, if a pitbull bites, then it is worse than other dog bites. So if you don't know how to approach a dog or behave around them, pitbull should not be your first experiment.
