Of course, there are other reasons, such as emboldening those who threaten nuclear war to continue murdering. After all, if there are no consequences, what’s to stop them? I remember the same sort of arguments when Reagan called them out as the evil empire, funded Star Wars and put Pershing Missiles in Europe. Lots of folks rung their hands out of fear of the unknown.

No action or inaction is perfectly safe. Doing nothing may be the catalyst that emboldens them to launch nucs as an easy way to declare victory. After all, if no one complains, why not? It’s just another bomb with more firepower is the way Russia might view it.
