You are right, I fault the Republicans for fighting against the best interests of the people and supporting the plutocrats working against the workers going all the way back to Hoover, Harding and Coolidge.
As mentioned, Krugman takes that back to the 1800's Gilded age. And that makes sense, it has always been rich against poor e.g. Dickens novels. And the rich have been using the Republican party to wield the plutocrats power for over a 100 years!
Hoover was a terrible person who refused to help the poor during the depression and killed bonus marchers. They felt letting the depression run on would get rid of the "dead wood'. Classic Republican ideology.

In the 50's you had the Republicans supporting the "House of Unamerican Activities, and Mccarthyism.
In the 60's you had Nixon one of the most criminal of all presidents and the time when the Republicans went to the "South" to woo the racists using "Lee Atwood's southern strategy".
NIxon, Reagan, Bush and Trump were all terrible presidents who put people on the supreme court who damaged our country greatly and led to the SC getting ready to overturn Roc V Wade.
The idea this Republican bullshit is new is dead wrong. The behavior and goals of the Republican party wooing and USING the racists and clueless folks goes all the way back to the turn of the last century at least.
The Republican party has put us from first place in humanity to the bottom of the barrel over the last 50 years.
