The issue is not so much about ethics as it is about geo- and Realpolitik. I could have told you 20- 25 years ago that unless Russia is totally dilapidated, demoralized and is a failing state - they would go to war if Ukraine tries to join NATO. It became even more obvious since 2014 (and the permanent war in Donbas). Ukraine in nato would be more than just an unstable situation. It would be a Cuban crisis in perpetuity. What I can’t comprehend is what the Europeans are thinking - they've seen thousands of wars throughout their history. Do they really want such an unstable time bomb in their front yards?

A while back I defined victory in this war as a situation when the world doesn’t get blown up. Everything else, they - and we - can deal with.
