MPEG Firsts From Toshiba, Matsushita Toshiba America Electronic Components Inc. developed the first prototype of a single-chip MPEG-4 codec. The integrated circuit was designed for applications characterized by unstable data transmission, such as wireless communications and Internet applications. The prototype is designed to support the H.263 format, which processes 10 frames-per-second at 176 x 144 resolution at 30 MHz. Toshiba executives would not say when they will begin manufacturing or selling the codec or how much it will cost. ********************************************************************************
DVx needs to reduce power consumption, but a sub $100 DVx ships months before this $158 "sample"................................
In other MPEG news, Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd., Matsushita Research Institute in Tokyo and Matsushita Electronics Corp. have developed a single-chip MPEG-2 encoder, which requires about 20 percent less power consumption than other ICs. The chip will begin sampling in June for 20,000 Yen (U.S. $158) and will be targeted at DV camcorders, video recordable DVD players and PCs.
