Sorry, I don't know the difference between these two cohorts. What is the difference?
Funny, since I mentioned some examples of not necessarily MAGA Republicans. Single issue voters like tax cuts or abortion or Israel, as well. You may recall not so long ago when Republicans were a coalition of libertarians, cultural conservatives, business and fiscal conservatives, national defense conservatives. The cultural conservatives have formed the guts of Trump populism. The rest, not necessarily. Business people, for example, don't naturally gravitate to populism nor do those from a cosmopolitan culture. Right now it seems to me they have split into three cohorts: Trumpers, riders-out, and former Republicans.
As for what constitutes MAGA Republicans vs Other Republicans, found these characteristics:
-----
Highlights of the findings include:
- Nearly all (98%) of respondents said they believe Trump’s election fraud claims and distrust the actual results of the presidential election;
- About 90% said voting “shouldn’t be easier”
- More than two-thirds said Trump bears no responsibility for the events of Jan. 6 – roughly the same percentage that laid the blame on antifa
- At least 90% said Trump was honest about COVID-19, and that state and local government restrictions related to the pandemic should be loosened
- Almost all said they were concerned that “forces are changing our country for the worse” and “the American way of life is disappearing”
The findings related to “difference”– race, gender and immigration status — provide an additional lens through which to view the MAGA movement.

With the understanding no general inference can be made about those who are NOT Registered Republicans from this, one can suspect that those voters who are NOT Registered Republicans would have a higher propensity to sign on with a party formed by Trump.
I would not think so. Independents who leaned Republican would have been Republicans by now had they wanted to affiliate with a party. They might lean Trump going forward and vote for him but most unlikely to register. Independents who left the GOP over Trump, of course, clearly would not want to join. I would guess your upper limit to be, generously, 20%
FWIW, the only Republicans I knew personally are now Independents. Couldn't take the stench while riding it out. |
