What do you do when one side considers and form of defense to be offense?

You check yourself to make sure that your defense really isn't offense. Seems to me that the distinction is similar to the difference between negative and positive rights as to expectation for accommodation. And then there's the distinction between rights and courtesies.

For example, demanding to be called by your choice of the two extant sets of pronouns would be defense. Any insistence on newly invented pronouns let alone an individualized set of them IMO would be offense.

Seven footers don't reasonably expect that the doorways in all public buildings let alone all buildings be raised to accommodate them even as a courtesy let alone as a right. They should reasonably expect to not be stared at or laughed at as they navigate doorways.
