On your second point, a mask stops germs from coughs and sneezes during surgery and stop slashing of body fluids into the nose and mouth of the staff.

Since I've had surgery while being awake (I ate before I broke a bone) I heard and saw bone chips and blood flying from my arm. The floor of the room had a large puddle of blood. When the metal rod was put in, using an electric drill I could move my arm and the doc had to tell me to stop moving since my arm was still open. Cool times.
