Laptop emailers are certainly the biggest cluster of low hanging
fruit, but gas stations and self-serve coin-op fax machines have
gotta be right down there too. I don't think you need no step
ladder to reach them. Metricom may not have the sales force to
get Ricochet replacements for gas station credit card phone lines
into the field, but that shouldn't be an obstacle. All they
have to do is partner up with whoever now has such a sales force,
engineer up a Ricochet-enabled version of the current standard
unit, and price it operationally below the cost of a monthly
phone line bill.

Have the Ricochet-enabled version and the phone-line needing
version as two products sold by a single sales force. In the
Ricochet coverage area, you give the salesman a Ricochet modem.
At the customer site the salesman turns it on. If it beeps, s/he
says "You're covered. You CAN install the lower-cost less-hassle
<yadda yadda> wireless version."
