From what I can gather, from Russia's point of view, they were willing to settle for Ukraine being neutral. I think they think this isn’t possible any longer - since Ukraine cannot be trusted. Why? Because, from Russia’s POV, Ukraine has no independent policies. Because their government is torn between foreign influences - and pressures and threats from domestic extremists.

So, since they can no longer count on Ukraine's neutrality - they will want to “weaken” it - and make it smaller - as much as possible. They will create “independent” jurisdictions in order to separate themselves from the NATO.

They see it as a war of survival. Which IS the REAL danger.

I mean, we here are more than welcome to think and say whatever we please. But what matters is for our leaders to understand correctly what the Russians believe - and to guess correctly what THEY will do.

If our leaders stick to the belief that the Russians won’t use nukes no matter what - we’re likely in trouble, because they may. They keep saying this, but - again! Still! - no one takes them seriously. It’s insane.
