even though you and I may not be religious we do need to respect that religious people do exist.

I respect their right to produce all the babies they want and to send them to Christian schools where they learn nonsense about electricity. They're the ones who don't respect those whose conscience comes from elsewhere and says otherwise.

The religious right at least as a legitimate complaint that their beliefs are being infringed upon.

Others following different highways do not infringe upon their beliefs. They get to follow their beliefs in their personal lives. It is not an infringement on one's beliefs to simply opt not to subscribe to them, not to adopt them as one's own. They're the ones denying that courtesy to others. Who the hell do they think they are to feel infringed upon when someone else simply chooses not to convert to their way of thinking.

We have Celtics fans and we have Nets fans. Being a Nets fan doesn't not infringe on any Celtics fan. They each get to cheer for their favorite team. In the same arena. In adjacent seats, even. Unless someone is so seriously overweight that he's overflowing his seat, there's no infringement.
