These are dark thoughts, Xunk. >At the moment man has immoderately imposed himself upon the planet.< We find ourselves at a moment of crisis. we're still animals behaving as animals (Further the species! Survival until tomorrow, and lotsa reproduction, are the only real mandates!) while flexing our embryonic faculties as sentients. Perhaps this is part of the planet's, uhm, bad word, plan. Maybe this is a virulent disease which will burn itself out and leave a weakened host reminiscent of the great extinction 220 Myr ago. Just maybe though these are birth pangs. Give us a coupla hundred years. We'll stretch our wings and leave the cradle. Then after a coupla millennia of boisterous childhood, our collective descendants will spare a moment to come back and clean up their room. I gotta dream.
