Re: Young Folk Portfolio -- Tax Loss Selling

Earlier in the year I decided to take profits on a number of positions and redistribute those funds to finish building out the number of companies I wanted in this portfolio. In the process of doing this, I accumulated more capital gains than in any year since this portfolio was created. Most of these gains were in a taxable account and thus have triggered a taxable event.

Today, with some companies seeing steep drawdowns in prices year to date, I decided to sell a couple of companies at a loss to help offset the amount of capital gains that have already been incurred.

I sold AAPL with a loss of 20.80% and MSFT with a loss of 18.83%.

I am going to wait at least 31 days for the wash rule to expire where I will then buy back these same two companies.

If I didn't need the tax losses to offset the much higher gains, I would have left these companies alone.
