Different numbers, here and there...

City limits impose restrictions...

Out in the countryside... the limits are self imposed... but, fewer than a dozen is more than enough for own use in a small homestead, and that leaving a healthy surplus for gifting to friends and family ?

Being less than rigorous in demanding "productivity"... and an interest in sustaining a stable society... means allowing the girls to retire gracefully. Any chicken dinners on Sunday... are store bought birds...

Chickens have been bred to function... they're quite productive... easy to end up with more than you need... but, productivity wanes with old age... so, again, a bit of a throttle to apply there...

We can have cold hard winters here in a continental climate, at elevation... so they'll get Chicken chow as required to over-winter well. The local feed and seed, here, has whatever we might need...

Don't expect to have them survive year round and thrive on only (particular) table scraps, bugs and weeds ?

But, depending on where you live relative to the equator and the coast... they can be very low input...
