Yes, exactly. The natural immune response is to create antibodies to multiple antigens present on the surface of the virus - not just to one single protein present on the spikes. The “narrowness” of the response may prove to be a weakness of the mRNA vaccines - a mutation in one antigen is more likely to occur than in a large number of them simultaneously.

A new generation of vaccines made the “conventional” way is ready for EUA - and eventually, hopefully, for full approval. But the best outcome would be to see more mild variants of CoViD. It would end up being one of several coronaviruses that cause common colds.
