Joe - Wind River

One of Wind River's more promising products is, as you noted, IXWORKS I2O RTOS (IRTOS).

This was written especially for Intel's i960RD controller for dedicated I/O process control. This is still in its infancy but promises to be a critical component of future servers. The I/O processor will of-load the server CPU from handling the nitty gritty (and time consuming) details of input/output processing.

As servers become more ubiquitous, the use of the I/O processor card (i960RD + I2O/IXWORKS ) should be a great boon for Wind River and a bit of a kicker for Intel.

Mainframes have for years employed dedicated I/O Channel Processors - which is one reason why that old iron is still useful when employed in a multi-user environment. Hopefully, the i960RD/IXWORKS will evolve into a "channel processor" technology for Intel servers.

WIND River also has another product - TORNADO - which is a graphical user interface for DSP development. This is another interesting product with great potential as the use of DSP's is growing rapidly in many areas. TORNAODO is aimed at speeding up the DSP engineering development time.

Wind River also supplies their RTOS software for a host of non-Intel embedded controller products - one example of which was the little Mars lander that made a big hit last summer.
