Before the pandemic I shared a flight with a coal executive. He said that clean coal power is BS and that there is no denying its effect. His company was switching to industries that could put coal to other uses and stay clean. His colleagues were apparently too stuck in their mechanics to be able to make the switch. He was doing it while he could so he can capture the customers and the markets.

There is a strange dynamic around dying industries which I have observed a few times. A company that serves a dying industry and is a lowest cost producer can make a ton of money while it lasts. This is because as others exit the market, that company gains an increasing market share even though the total size of the market is shrinking.

Maybe something like that is happening with coal. I don't know.
