Good morning Bob,

Yes..put down fertilizer...manure...and then mulch on top for the trees. Don't pile it around the trunk...leave a gap. I use the mulch to improve the soil and save water. Not so critical where you are.

I read fruit trees use an eighth of a pound of nitrogen per year per year of age. Be cautious fertilizing a one year old tree. I overdid it on two young ones and crisped the leaves. A two year old can take a quarter pound. Eight year up to a pound., After that no more. Manure is about 1 % nitrogen. So 25 pounds on a two year old tree gives you a quarter pound. Useful info I hope.
