Excuse me if you are not even American - plenty of other people around the world have that same tribal alpha male territorial genocidal kleptocratic dominance hierarchy found-wealth chimpoid "thinking".
"Russia is trying to teach Ukraine". Do you have a handbook they have given Ukraine to follow, or else? Or are you doing the very popular mind-reading over the internet, with free, unqualified, long distance psychological analysis? We can be fairly sure of what Russia's military is doing, though propaganda by the USA's disbanded Office of Disinformation makes even that problematic and "Free Speech" doesn't apply to things that Russia is saying so lies and disinformation by the USA Propaganda producers are what most people see.
Putin wrote a big article about a year ago explaining his thinking. I wonder if you read that or you got your ideas directly from Twitter or Facebook or CNN. There has been a LOT that various Russians in authority have said over many years leading up to the decision to support independence for Donetsk and Luhansk by use of tanks, aircraft, artillery, machine guns, rockets etc. with atomic bombs kept in their back pocket in case USA/NATO co-conspirators lost their minds completely. There's no need for mind-reading but it is useful to interpolate between spoken words to deduce the unspoken ideas = not quite mind-reading if the interpolation is reasonable.
Russia is not "trying to teach Ukraine a lesson". Russia is stopping, physically, the USA's Russia Russia Russia onslaught before it gains even more ground. Ukraine is almost irrelevant. If Ukraine had just continued to produce wheat and stuff and posed no threat and had not tried to chuck Russia out of Crimea and Sevastopol, and was not gearing up to be a launch pad for USA attacks on Russia itself, and had not gone into the mass killing of Russian independence people in the east, then I doubt that Russians would have felt the need to defend themselves by physically stopping USA USA USA, Zelensky, Azovs, The New Barbarossans in Krautville, Boris the Barbarian, etc.
China is currently trying that "We're the Superpower, so shut up, know your place, do as we say, give us your money. Or else." And they've got the cash flow to back it up. I'm okay with bribery, trade and economic seduction and negotiation, but when they pull out the guns as the Mainlanders love to do, to Taiwan, Hong Kong, Tibet, and anyone else who gets in their way or gets uppity, they need to be put in their place and taught a lesson. Many people already buy anything except Made in China and China is being sent to Coventry.
Telling people to shut up, do as you're told, give us your money, know your place, or else, is popular, including in democracies and maybe even more so in democracies as the winning half feel entitled to attack the minority, whereas in totalitarian dictatorships, only the gang supporting the boss feel part of the ruling group. Pitchforks are a constant danger to them.

Which is not to say that a chaotic rampaging mob of chimps is better = of course there has to be protection, by force, of private property rights. Private property rights include self, physical, and more ethereal property rights - such as use of spectrum, volume of voice in the presence of others, pollution or taking of commons such as oceans, rivers, air, as well as risk management = we don't want dodgy nuclear reactors being built near a town.
Because the commons is such a large part of our lives, freedom is necessarily heavily circumscribed. You don't want my smoke, noise, viral infections, static in your radio, poop in your river or ocean, nor me taking all the fish or water from a river.
Unfortunately, the balance between the individual and the horrible totalitarian bosses normally trends towards the totalitarian. Moslem bosses go full scale deflection. It's the Koran or the scimitar. And one gang's interpretation means the Shite interpretation deserves head-hacking. If somebody insults their sacred right to rule the world, it's head-hacking. The Catholics were not too forgiving either according to vicious rumour going back a few centuries. Henry VIIIth was partial to head-hacking of miscreants too. Burning of witches at the stake was popular. Japanese in Nanking were not into Libertarianism. Maoris captured, enslaved and cooked their opponents = "long pig" was apparently delicious. Unfortunately, Maoris are trying to recreate their imagined idyllic stone age cannibal culture which did NOT involve voting and Maslow.
Russians are defending themselves. USA was on the attack. Hence, the Ukraine carve-up. Not to "teach a lesson". Think of it like a school shooting. The problem isn't really the guns. It's the creation in the mind of those shooting a desire to go postal. In Switzerland, apparently there are guns everywhere, but we never hear of school shootings, or in night clubs or anywhere [maybe I've missed them]. Many countries have guns all over the place but school shootings aren't popularized with armed guards at the door. Japan has had at least one school mass murdering but I think that might have been by knife. Beslan was a world-record school shooting and that was Moslems doing the murdering, but it was more a kidnapping for political demands.
Russia has been bullied for decades. Which of course followed their century of not just bullying but mass murdering by Stalin and collectivist socialists. It's time for a truce and aim forwards instead of to the past. Nobody can get revenge against Stalin by attacking Russians generally. Mostly those Russians are descendants of people who were tormented too.
USA should stop creating school shooters, stop telling people "Shut up, know your non-superpower place, do as we say, give us your money, lie down and die, or else." A lot of other people [such as Moslems] should stop saying, "Shut up, do as we say, give us your money, know your place, lie down and die, or else". Apparently, for example, apostasy is still a thing. I'll ask Google. ..... Hey presto ....
It is a hudud crime, which means it is a crime against God, and the punishment has been fixed by God. The punishment for apostasy includes state enforced annulment of his or her marriage, seizure of the person's children and property with automatic assignment to guardians and heirs, and death for the apostate.
Of course the word God doesn't actually mean any supernatural being, it means some bloke dressed up in robes who declares Himself to be the approved person with the dinkum personal pipeline to the supernatural who conveniently tells him who is worthy of the scimitar. Sure, like the legal "profession", they cite precedent and the heretofore, but really, it's "Shut up, give me your money, do as I say, know your place, or else ...".
I'm glad we cleared that up.
So let's get out there and kill anyone who says: "Shut up, sit down, know your place, give me your money, do as I say, or else" when it's not a matter of personal property rights or the commons being defended. Which of course leaves a lot of room for debate about exactly what "The commons" is and where personal property starts and stops, especially when it's a risk-management line between the personal and the public, such as carrying and propagating a 70% mortality respiratory disease, for example.
