China always - since Taiwan split off - kept saying that if they ever claim formal independence, they would go to war. In the 70’s, the US agreed with this “one China” policy. It worked fine for all concerned - ever after. Just recently, Taiwan saved China’s bacon when Pres. Trump made it illegal to sell certain chips to China / Huawei — several tens of thousands Taiwanese engineers went to work to help China develop their domestic chip industry.

A while back I saw results of some Taiwanese polls — over 50% want to maintain the status quo with the mainland. Relatively small minorities wanted independence - or, to the contrary, a merger with China. Some simply didn’t care. So, if this is to be solved democratically, via referendum, things would remain exactly the way they were for over past 70 years.

Their GDP per capita last year was almost $34K
