As you probably know by now: Indonesia in a BIG move, talking about an "independent" currency board with rumor pegging the rupiah at 5500/$, sent currency traders "scrambling" to sell dollars and drove it up to the 7700 level.

Two bad pieces of news about Korea, though. First, IMF is investigating alleged DRAM dumping, supported by bailout funds. That is, accusations are being made that at least some IMF support is being used to fund continuing below-cost DRAM production. Second, bad news about the labor unions' intransigence, just after seemingly good news about their agreement to allow layoffs for insolvent companies.

Although a number of financial firms are scouring Asia for bargains to buy, two of the best stock pickers are staying out -- Jerry Winters at Wiltshire (in Pasadena)(#1 stock-picker, up something like, what, 800 or 900% over past 10 years) and Mike Steinberg both say they're staying completely out of the troubled sectors of Asia. You just have to listen to these guys for a dose of reality when it comes to investing.

Whatever AMAT and the sector may do in the near term, we have to remember that the worst may be to come. Or it may be past. I'm still planning to go long and let it sit on any near-term weakness, but I'm looking over my shoulder.
