Ever drive at night through the low desert? My San Diego cousins (driven by their parents in the '50s and '60s) took I-10 at night, slept during the day. They had no A/C. The only way to survive that drive under those conditions.

You might hit a rabbit or coyote, but nothing bigger. At least that's the odds. I've done a run from LA to Phoenix at night. Not much in the way of animals in the desert. The killer for me was driving into the lightening skies before dawn, then the first hint of sun in your face. Going to work immediately did not work well. Only tried that once. Went back to leaving after dinner for a night drive.

Driving to LA is much better in the middle of the night to early morning, so you wouldn't have it so bad.
