The worst week since the worst of the Pandemic in 2020 is what they’re saying, a drop of 4.8% in the NASDAQ composite. So where did investors fleeing the general market put their money? Someplace safe, and a good hedge against inflation … why Biotechs of course, as the S&P Biotech index rose a whopping 1.2%. Well Ok, maybe not such a good week for the stocks picked by the contestants, as their portfolio average and median performance for the week was down 1.5% and 1.1%.

In terms of individual stocks, those that went up really went up. The big winner is MREO which just miss doubling on Friday, based on an unsourced article in The Times that AstraZenica is rumored to be “interested in acquiring”, which gave the single contestant who picked it the third best return of the week (up 5.5% for their portfolio in toto). Even with this, though its YTD performance is down 19%, which still “outperforms” the market.

OPTN’s almost as good performance is perhaps more solid, as apparently they announced favorable results on a phase 3 trial for a drug to treat chronic sinusitis (not a small target market compared to some). OPTN has the best YTD performance. And the single contestant who picked it, turned in the first place weekly performance of up 12%.

In terms of the top ten contestant portfolios, this week doesn’t reveal much in the way of drama, e.g. no change in the order of the top five from last week. Congratulations to BIO_TITAN who broke into the ranks of the top ten for the first time this week.
