I think so. The father of modern U.S. geopolitical thinking is Zbig Brzezinski - a life long Democrat, who started out under Lyndon Johnson - and by the time Carter became president, Zbig was an influential Nat Sec advisor. All along, through his writings and academic work, service on the Trilateral Commission and so forth - he was an important player in shaping the nation's presence in the world. It seems, his vision was for the US to remain the dominant global power. In effect, the world policeman. That is not necessarily a very attractive posture, imo - because challenges (and wars) will never end. Empires seldom last. Our previous central philosophy - about the business of America being business - was far more constructive.
