Wharfie, R&D into renewables and associated technologies like batteries have been ongoing for decades now.

The fact that we have even transitioned from hybrids to plug-in hybrids to fully electric vehicles is the result of thousands of man-years (or "people-years," according to Beta Boy Trudeau) of research, development, and marketing.

Meanwhile solar panel technology has hit a plateau. This wasn't for lack of trying, mind you. Many advances have come and gone. Other solar technologies like molten salt reactors have also been tried, but they come with too many problems.

Windmills have also come a long way, but they too are hitting a lot of stumbling blocks. Germany, for example, recently halted production on their offshore windmills because maintaining them is incredibly expensive.

These are all hugely complex engineering problems that won't be solved just by putting solar panels up on the White House roof. Otherwise, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and Brandon would have already done that. Because symbolism matters, right?
