I was the president our student IEEE chapter when I was in school and also the president of another major association. So maybe that is where the politics comes from ;)

More to the point - your question was loaded (I don't mean that as an insult). And there is no such thing as "free markets". The oil industry exists because the GM president spearheaded the national highway system and used tax payer money to draw roads to every remote outpost so he can sell cars. No roads = no cars.

This is why unlike every other country in the world, the US has more cars than people and the public transportation sucks so much so everyone has to buy a car. I've never heard the oil or auto companies complain about that government interference.

I am not taking a political position here. I am just pointing out the obvious facts. If you are in the market, you should play the hand you are dealt, not to mix it with politics. Even though politics is always part of the game, its use is different than when you are in the voting booth.
