A general observation as a person that was born and grew up in a multicultural city in the oppressed Romania under the Soviet boot.

1. The Russians as in Ukraine now, extracted all natural resources if gold or crude oil from Romania as "compensation for their liberation" and took big slices of Romanian territory declaring as their own (Bessarabia - now Moldova, 1/2 of Bukovina and part of southern Bessarabia as the Dniester river was at the time the natural Romanian border - who was against it was summarily shot and the start of expulsion of the local population to Siberia and occupation of empty house by Russian.

2.Having a very Romanian name and being an outstanding pupil I was recruited to the Romanian "Securitate School" the equivalent of KGB school now called FSB.

3. Witnessed and hear about the revolt in Hungary in 1956 lasting a deep impression what Russians mean, as the town I was born Lugoj was about 100km from the Hungarian border.

4. Of course for refusing to enroll as an intern to the Romanian KGB, it had strong repercussion on my parents.

5. Luckily within 18 months we received the permission to emigrate to Israel in a lottery.

6. Right at arrival my parents where cheated and send to the middle of the desert to Yeruham at the time a God forgotten village.

7. Both my parents where forced to work in construction as there where no other opportunities and my mother was sexually harassed and let go.

8. With big efforts our family extracted itself from this sorry situation at a time the Israeli Socialist party was in power in alliance with the Israeli Communist party.

There is much more to be told about our experiences in Israel and the degradations my parents went trough for many years. Israel is NOT the land of opportunity and a far cry from what Theodore Herzl wrote in his book Alt- Neuland ( en.wikipedia.org )

My point for all this story to the participants on this thread and SI in general is simple - without experiencing what "Socialism" or "Communism" Russian style means and feel on your own skin you cannot judge the happening today in Ukraine and Russia and I presume many other countries under totalitarian regime that plays to be democratic.

Therefore the empty talk of certain academicians including John Mearsheimer are just that clueless assumptions.

Ukraine was never a free entity within the present borders including Crimea, it was an assembly of various ethnic groups that had one goal to get rid of their boyars and royalty exploitations. That is how the Cossacks movements arose.


What is happening now in Ukraine is what happen to this territory since Roman times, and the times of Trouble in Russia ( en.wikipedia.org ) nothing new there.

Therefore no matter how dense the US leadership is or how much the EU is trying to defend its economic interests to get cheap energy from Russia - real people by the tens of thousands are paying with their lives and limbs for the wellbeing of Europe and Russia which is trying to avoid a total economic collapse and disintegration.

For years (since 2006) I learned Russian and Ukrainian mentality on my own skin, had high ranking retired KGB officials as visitors and staying in my apartment and learned their way of thinking.

What is done now in Ukraine is beyond the worst imagination and I question if the Russians, the offspring's of the Varangians (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olga_of_Kiev and en.wikipedia.org are not worse than the worst brainwashed Germans of Waffen SS Einzartzgruppen.( en.wikipedia.org )

If true that Putin is indeed terminally ill his actions make a lot of sense - try to leave a strong narrative in Russian consciousness no matter how many casualties are on both sides as he would die anyway within a year or two and who cares about war crimes..
