If patients aren't able to cough up mucus, and they are gurgling, they need to be suction. Sometimes you can do it orally, if it's at the back of the throat; this is called a tonsil sucker.



If the patient can't clear his trachea, we use the flexible catheter shown in that video, either nasally or orally. If a patient has an ET tube, we suction it.
