Internet Ready to Tackle TV
Multicasting would let millions see same show
Tuesday, February 10, 1998

Internet engineers have seen the future, and it is . . . television.

Several hundred engineers gathered in San Jose this week for the
grandly named IP Multicast Summit. IP stands for Internet protocol,
the technology for sending data over the Internet.

Vint Cerf, senior vice president at MCI Communications and a creator
of the Internet, said it's taken all these years for hardware vendors,
like Cisco and 3Com, and Internet service providers, like UUNet and
MCI, to build multicast capability into the Net.
