His 27-year career as a CIA analyst includes serving as Chief of the Soviet Foreign Policy Branch and preparer/briefer of the President’s Daily Brief
With this resume, you better believe it that this man is an expert. Doesn’t mean an expert can’t make a mistake - but it’s still very different than listening to someone who simply has no knowledge.

I’ve heard before about this - in the Russia / Ukraine issue, it was very common that the more a person knew about the conflict, the more likely he would be to refuse to believe that a war was coming.

I recognized some months in advance that the NATO decision point was nearing. By the time Ukraine was surrounded and the ultimatums issued, there was no doubt. Especially after the ultimatum was replied to with bland legalistic platitudes.

But - I expected that Russia would continue to ratchet up pressure - like, they would send in troops to support Lugansk/Donbas regions. When they announced diplomatic recognition of those new nations, it was obvious that this gives Russia a basis for coming in to defend them.

But - boom! - the same day, they invaded in force.

Looking back, it was the only way to go. The fighting is going on for over 4 months - and they still didn’t recapture the territory of Lugansk and Donbas regions. Maybe that was the war Nato was preparing for - Ukraine's defensive fortifications in those regions are extremely effective. It’s taking many moons to defeat them, even attacking practically from all directions.

Ukraine and her Western supporters should have taken the Minsk-type deal while it was available. But, they all figured that the NATO trained and armed Ukraine's military would make minced meat out of Russia - the oversized gas station with nukes. They figured it’s anyway time to move in on those uppity bothersome ex-commie bums.

That’s a classic mistake that led to a great many lost wars.
