>>subjective and even elitist.

People without means often don't have the luxury to learn something that doesn't pay off right away. It is fine for someone who isn't living hand to mouth to talk about how great it is to be able to discuss points of humanities but when the landlord comes to the door a thought-provoking discussion of Voltaire or Cicero is not going to keep the sheriff from evicting you.

Education was a luxury I got after serving in the military because I didn't get parental support in a form I could tolerate when I got out of high school. I found some classes in humanities were a cardinal waste of time where opinion was considered fact. I had to take an extra 9 units of campus-specific General Education from the same University system I'd previously matriculated from. And three of that was a Black Women's Studies professor who opined about a lot of shit that was simply supposed to be reflected back without critical thought. I was a working stiff working a full time job, with a new baby, who had a bit of life experience outside of "white privilege", and working on a degree that would get me paid. My wife had an Indian Studies class where the instructor decided to just give everyone an A whether or not they contributed.

I really didn't have the luxury or patience to take that BS class but hunkered down and did it anyway.
