I put myself through six years of university and received no help at all.

My mother was poor and couldn't help me and my dad was a right winger who wouldn't help and a person I refused to see the last 30 years off my life.

I would work all night at hamburger stands and go straight to my classes.

I always worked part time. Pumped gas, hamburger stands, box and bag factories and federal work study programs cleaning toilets and teaching people to climb in the Sierra.

My last two years of graduate work i paid for by working out of the laborers union.

But I admit it is harder to do today, although most community colleges are still pretty reasonable.

We need to make education affordable or even free like we do K thru 12.

I knew how important it was to get an education and we need to teach all kids how important it is, because it is important, just like eating right and exercising.

He who does not learn goes through life intellectually blind e.g. Trump supporters :)>!

>>subjective and even elitist.

People without means often don't have the luxury to learn something that doesn't pay off right away. It is fine for someone who isn't living hand to mouth to talk about how great it is to be able to discuss points of humanities but when the landlord comes to the door a thought-provoking discussion of Voltaire or Cicero is not going to keep the sheriff from evicting you.

Education was a luxury I got after serving in the military because I didn't get parental support in a form I could tolerate when I got out of high school. I found some classes in humanities were a cardinal waste of time where opinion was considered fact. I had to take an extra 9 units of campus-specific General Education from the same University system I'd previously matriculated from. And three of that was a Black Women's Studies professor who opined about a lot of shit that was simply supposed to be reflected back without critical thought. I was a working stiff working a full time job, with a new baby, who had a bit of life experience outside of "white privilege", and working on a degree that would get me paid. My wife had an Indian Studies class where the instructor decided to just give everyone an A whether or not they contributed.

I really didn't have the luxury or patience to take that BS class but hunkered down and did it anyway.
