Also, I don't think anything is free or should be. There needs to be a price, everyone receiving a free education must give something back later; some sort of service (not necessarily military.)
Wouldn't it be fair to say that most people give back by being productive tax paying members of society?

As for some sort of mandatory military or equivalent service ... I am all for it but for a different reason. It takes young people out of their (often too cozy) environment, teaches them respect and teamwork
