I agree, all the way through two years of public community college.

But an intelligent merit system after that. Subsidized by estate and other taxes. But everyone should pay back the society where it is needed desperately with some service; for example rural medicine or inner city teaching. Of course some unions will fight service labor, I am not naïve to this.

Many (most) people just don't want to learn about Bertrand Russell (also a mathematics and philosopher hero to me in my college years, BTW.)

Some people can quote Shakespeare on a stage, others can take apart a diesel engine and put it back together. (NOT ME!) Some people are great chefs, they are bored with liberal arts or science. Some folks are good at plumbing or carpentry. There must be multiple paths other than sending everyone to four, six or eight year colleges.

I'm not sure we are that far apart here.

Lets begin with getting inner city people through high school. It's complicated and even political with class, race and NIMBY overtones. Illiteracy in the USA is actually a problem.
