Last night they interviewed a corn farmer on the local news. The draught is really impacting everyone that doesn't irrigate. He said every 12 hours without rain at this stage of growth knocks one percent off yields. Once the plants put the tell tale flower turkey foot top on the plant, every 4 hours without rain knocks the yield down one percent.
We have zero rain forecast for the next week and temps in the high 90s.
I drove around my fields yesterday checking my grasses and pulled thistle. The ground is like concrete. I couldn't get my weed digger to go more than an inch or two in the ground. My digger is a self made 3/8" stainless steel plate forked chisel welded to a angle iron cross tee so I can jump on it with both feet and then a 1-1/2 square tubing handle for me to hold onto, balance and then pry up the ground. It's not wimpy and it's sharp on the bottom.
I was starting to regret killing my nice fescue fields and trying to plant this native warm season prairie grass. Some of my fields are struggling but two of them are looking great. Here in the middle of this drought, everyone's fields are dormant/dead and brown but my two good fields are lush, thick and green as can be. That prairie grass has roots down 15 feet so it's getting moisture still from the spring rains.
