Trades are great - but they don't advance the technical arts. Engineering, Math and Science do that.
If you look at European statistics, you may want to change your tune. A rather high percentage of those who completed an apprenticeship go on to some sort of "higher" education and are actually in higher demand than those without practical / hands-on experience.

I'll give you just one of many examples: Structural engineering ... Who would you prefer to hire? A kid which went from school to school or a kid which went from school to a related trade / hands-on experience and then on to engineering?

I know which one I would prefer.
