La Niña heads for rare “triple dip,” dampening global temperatures

Forecasts for La Niña continue to show that we are likely to get a third year in a row of La Niña conditions in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. This means that our next winter could be warmer and drier than normal again. Some of the longest-range models are showing this already. As I have learned from my extension friends, that means there is an increased chance of overwintering of some diseases and pests that will make taking care of next year’s crop more difficult. If you are starting the planning process for what to plant next year, you will need to consider the impacts of another warm winter on your potential costs for preventing diseases and minimizing pests.
