Big oil is but one of the beneficiaries

Yes, I now refer to the whole of them as the 'oligarchs'. I think a chief influence is the Koch brother and his energy interests. He is particularly intent on setting up professional influence groups like the Federalists and Heritage and his own PAC. Where goes oil also goes GM and construction interests and even the Pharma companies and Health insurance who profit when people are sick.

It could loosely be generalized as rich white guys, but but it's probably a minority who are avid, but they pester their peers to contribute to the think tanks implying it is a benign option. The think tanks in turn set up the troll farms that directly try to influence voters and insurectionists.

I think much of their success comes from distraction. They push deliberately controversial positions with respect to abortion, guns, lgbtq, seat belts and fluoride to keep peoples attention away from their bread and butter issues. Right now their main bread and butter concern is the billions of infrastructure already built out for oil production, and they are determined not to have oil replaced with alternative energy solutions before they have wrung out as much profit as they can manage. Distraction dissipates the motivation of their opponents.
