he Republican members are required to vote in lock step with McConnell or they are out! The enforcement mechanism for the "or they are out" is the primary system which is rigged so that nobody is allowed to run in the primary unless the existing party agrees that they are in fact a Republican. When the primary is mixed candidates of all parties then there is no way for party leaders to control who is a candidate. They can hoot and hollar and promote who they want. What they can't do is tie support for a popular candidate to a requirement that all down ballot races in the primary have to be of the same party as that popular one. They can't prohibit crossover votting in the critical early races.That's where the party really squeezes the voters.
