It sounds to me like are confusing atheism with secularism.

Secularism is tolerant of multiple choices. The wise separation clause in the first clause of the first amendment speaks to this.

Atheists can also be evil. Some atheists believe that religions should be banned in favor of "science." Mao was an atheist, but did not promote a secular vision for China. Plenty of other examples in the 20th century - violent attacks on religious temples and landmarks too.

I am a secular humanist, and an agnostic; I see the good that has come from most religions (pantheist too.) Especially religions that teach tolerance and peace.
