keiko, i just learn about it today. when did you know this company? here is the news:Tuesday February 10, 12:30 pm Eastern Time Boston Biomedica gets 3 anti-HIV patents WEST BRIDGEWATER, Mass., Feb 10 (Reuters) - Boston Biomedica Inc and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill said Tuesday they have been awarded three U.S. patents for compounds that inhibit replication of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. The company and the university also have agreed to extend for a year their original three-year sponsored research agreement, which had been due to expire this month, they said in a joint news release. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Under the agreement, Boston Biomedica will continue to fund research in drug discovery by UNC's Dr. K. H. Lee to find and develop compounds from natural products - primarily plant derivatives - that inhibit HIV replication in an in-vitro assay system, they said.
Lee is also working to purify and characterize these compounds, and to make synthetic derivatives that are more soluble, less toxic, or have other enhanced anti-HIV properties, they said.
Boston Biomedica has exclusive worldwide rights to three families of anti-HIV compounds as a result of this collaboration with UNC, they said.
Several compounds have exhibited therapeutic indices in in-vitro assay systems significantly in excess of those recorded for AZT under comparable test conditions, they said.
In addition, the Company has the right of first refusal to any new anti-HIV compounds or derivatives developed in the course of this sponsored research, they said.
