I offer this as one bit of data to answer your question;

In the February 23rd issue of Forbes ASAP George Gilder writes, in an article entitled "Telecosm Outlook:1998", the following;

<With SiGe pulling even with GaAs, but at a significant cost advantage, the technology is poised to explode into the RF IC marketplace. We stand by our comments made in the July 1997 Gilder Technology Report that "SiGe has the potential to seriously compromise the future of the three GaAs companies(Vitesse Semiconductor,Triquint Semiconductor, and Anadigics Semiconductor) that have been cited in various reports." While SiGe will not supplant existing GaAs designs, the single-chip systems of the future will move toward the new process.>
