The biggest mistakes any of us individual investors make is selling to soon. I have made this mistake over and over again. In Reminiscences of a Stock Operator, there's a great anecdote about this guy named Mr. Partridge who's supposed to be a successful long-term investor, and his words of advice are always just "Well, this is a bull market, you know!" He gets a hot tip, buys, and then gets another hot tip to sell, but he doesn't. His reason why is essentially that he can't afford to sell, because "well, this is a bull market, you know!" The lesson: don't fight the tide -- if it's a bull market, it's going to keep going up until it isn't a bull market anymore. Excellent book, by the way.
