I was not aware of the details you mentioned. It does go to show that with any investment there is 'Political' risk that is difficult to quantify. The large mega cap companies have exposure to many regions of the world and are subject to this 'political' risk especially foreign currency risk.

Not sure you can avoid it unless you focus on small cap companies that manufacture/design products in the US and/or service businesses that are local inside the US.
